unkie howie

2 weeks ago today, my uncle howard, known on this blog as the kansas heckler "unk", passed away after a decade long battle with cancer. he will be greatly missed by his family, and all his friends that he played music with over the past 30 years.

he and my uncle bill were always playing guitar together from the time i can remember, and were a great influence in me wanting to learn to play as a kid. of course, they were quick to give up on me amounting to much, as i wanted an electric guitar, and in their opinion if it plugged in it wasn't an instrument. (a feeling shared by my father, as these are his brothers) fortunately for me, they softened in their old age, and would at least occasionally talk to me about music after i started playing full time with premonition. of course, it was always in some dark alley or while fishing out in the middle of nowhere, as their bluegrass reputation was on the line. out of these back woods chat sessions, though, came the idea for the bluegrass/old country album we have been working on since july of last year. and while i still have a few bass and rythm guitar parts to finish recording, luckily all of howard's were done, and the mixing had begun on several tracks, one of which he really liked, so it was played at the cemetary for his funeral. it was the first time any of the songs had been played in public, and went over really well, so here it is for anyone who wants to download and listen to one of the songs that will be on the album.

I am a Pilgrim Download Song
howard wood- guitar (lead and rhythm) and vocals
william (bill) wood-mandolin
hank wood- bass and rhythm guitar

for the rest of the songs, you'll just have to wait until the album is done, and yes, it will still be finished, as planned. there is also a post howard was working on from when he went to the bluegrass festival in winfield kansas last fall, i will see if uncle bill wants to add anything to it since he was there also, before i post it.

so that is where i have been the last 2 weeks. in other news, carl actually updated the Premonition Live website! and i will get our schedule updated on my site this week also.

Wherever I May Go

You’re in my thoughts and in my heart
Wherever I may go;
On Valentine’s Day I’d like to say
I care more than you know.

Happy Valentine's Day

Hank,
You probably won't remember me, but you posted on my blog about the podcasts I put up of Howard at Winfield last year. Your post was Some Time Ago, but I wanted to say that I downloaded Pilgrim and love it. Thanks for making that avail. I'll check back now and then for the completion of the album. I really meant what I said: I could listen to Howard sing for hours and be quite happy. He had this special voice that I loved.

Take good care & best of luck with what seems to be a thriving music career! -Brandie Andrews
